Yurisha Iscandar was the third princess of the planet Iscandar and a younger sister of Queen Starsha Iscandar. She was taken out of Sanctel to serve as an envoy to the Terrans, and subsequently played a significant role in the Great Garmillas War. Afterwards, she joined the Garmillas Provisional Government and served as a pillar of the Garmillas reconstruction and democratization efforts.

History[]

Early Life and mission to Earth[]

Third Princess Yurisha Iscandar was born into Iscandar's royal family as the younger sister of Queen Starsha Iscandar and Second Princess Sasha Iscandar. After her birth, she underwent the ritual to enter Sanctel, which made her a static, yet immortal memory tied to the existence of the vault.[1] In 2191,[2] the Great Garmillas Empire, based on Iscandar's double planet Garmillas, declared war on planet Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy. Garmillan bombings destroyed the planet's biosphere, and Queen Starsha decided to help by giving the Terrans a Cosmo Reverse System to restore their dying world. Yurisha was taken out of Sanctel to act as a messenger to the Terrans. She carried plans to build a Wave-motion Engine and was tasked with guiding a Terran vessel equipped with the engine to planet Iscandar where they would receive the device. Sasha was supposed to arrive a year after her, bringing the last component necessary for the engine to work.[3][4][5] Additionally, she was to serve as an observer for Starsha, judging the battleship's actions during the six-month journey.[6]

Yurisha and Mori in the immediate aftermath of their incident

In 2198, Yurisha arrived at her destination and made contact with the United Nations.[4] She was assigned an aid in the form of a young Terran woman named Yuki Mori, who bore an uncanny resemblance to her. The two quickly became friends,[7] and Yurisha fell in love with Mori.[8] She gave Mori a holographic message capsule from Queen Starsha and formed a psychic connection with her. In May of 2198,[9] the two were caught in a possible terrorist bombing that destroyed their vehicle and severely injured Yurisha, and fell into a coma.[5]

The Voyage Home[]

Early voyage and awakening[]

Yurisha's comatose body was secretly stored in the auto navigation room aboard Yamato, the battleship selected to make the voyage to Iscandar. As Yurisha was supposed to be the one showing the way to the planet to the Terrans, the United Nation Cosmo Navy was forced to use the ship's computers are to draw a limited amount of navigational information from her mind to help the crew to make their way out of the Milky Way Galaxy.[5]

About a month after the battleship's take-off, Yurisha's consciousness entered into contact with a Gamiloid robot that had been captured by the Terrans. She asked the android who he was, and when he introduced himself, Yurisha responded she wasn’t asking his name. The robot tried to flee, but his systems failed before he could be captured. Following this event, a Yamato crewmember, Warrant Officer Yuria Misaki, began being mysteriously drawn to the automatic navigation room. During one visit, she saw Yurisha's consciousness and established a connection with her. Yurisha started to appear in a ghostly form to various crew members, and Misaki even dreamt of Yurisha and Mori's time in a hospital immediately after their incident.[10]

In April of 2199, while Yamato was under a psychic attack from a Jirel agent of the Great Garmillas Empire, Misaki entered the automatic navigation room and Yurisha's consciousness took control of her body. During the attack, Mori, who had lost all memories of her past, was trapped in an illusion of her time in the hospital. In the illusion, Yurisha appeared and gave Mori a message capsule while reassuring her. This shocked the attacker and interfered with her psychic abilities. Yurisha then used Misaki's body to wake Mori up and bring her back to reality. The two went to Yamato's central computer room, where Mori discovered that the battleship was preparing to warp to an unknown location. Yurisha realized that they were being led into a trap and that Garmillas was waiting at their destination to capture them. Mori, still under the impression of talking to Misaki, ordered the Third Princess to stay behind, unknowingly making herself a target for the enemy once again. As Mori left, Yurisha looked at a computer displaying data from the Wave-motion Engine and realized that Sasha had reached her destination. Eventually, the enemy was defeated and Yamato resumed normal navigation. Yurisha returned to the automatic navigation room and welcomed Misaki back, giving her control.[11]

Undercover aboard Yamato[]

While in control, she unbinds Misaki's pigtails and lets her hair down, and temporarily blocks Misaki's awareness of her circumstances. Yurisha later questions science officer Shiro Sanada about wave motion energy and becomes especially concerned when she learns that it is being used to power a weapon of mass destruction, a wave motion gun.[12]

YurishaRests

Princess Yurisha lies comatose aboard the Yamato.

She accompanies a landing party to the surface of the planet Beemela 4 and guides them to the wreck of an Iscandarian vessel, which contains a wave motion core and detailed astronomical data.[13] In doing so, the crew becomes aware of the fact that Yurisha is operating through Misaki. Yurisha approaches Admiral Juzo Okita on the eve of a battle with Great Garmillas Empire forces, to discuss Starsha's motivations for granting wave motion technology to Earth for a long mission to Iscandar, rather than simply delivering the means to save Earth directly.[6] In the course of the battle, Yurisha frees Misaki after witnessing a close friend being shot, and she awakens from her coma soon after Mori is kidnapped off the ship.[14]

The Rainbow Star Cluster and Leptapoda[]

Battle against the Garmillas Empire[]

Back on Iscandar[]

Following her recovery, Yurisha actively contributes to the safety of Yamato and Earth, and to relations between Iscandar and Garmillas. She aids Kodai in an attempt to recovery Mori from the prison planet Leptapoda, and while on the bridge during the Battle of Garmillas, she senses Mori's presence aboard a vessel fleeing from Garmillas, triggering a second rescue mission.[8][15] Yurisha goes on to defend Yamato's use of a wave motion gun when Starsha threatens to withhold her promise of support for the dying Earth.[16]

Time on Garmillas[]

Near the end of the voyage to Iscandar, Yurisha befriends a Garmillas officer aboard Yamato, Lower Storm Leader Melda Dietz. Two months after the ship leaves on its return trip to Earth, Dietz joins Yurisha for a meeting with Admiral Gul Dietz and several other leaders of the new Garmillas government.[17][18]

Dezarium War[]

Yurisha still remains on Iscander, along with Melda Dietz, and Starsha, witnessed the tragic events that unfolded before their very eyes when a mysterious new enemy called the Dezarium mercilessly attacked and destroyed Gamilas, the resulting explosive shock-wave began knocking Iscandar out of orbit.[19]

Personality[]

Yurisha, while controling Yuria Misaki

Yurisha Iscandar is a contradictory mix of strong principles and a detached, almost child-like attitude toward the world. While in psychic control of Yuria Misaki, Yurisha regularly wanders the decks of Yamato, focusing almost entirely on her own interests and paying only minimal attention to the circumstances around her ("What Lies Beyond", "Point of No Return"). Even in a moment of danger on Beemela 4, she laughs happily while Analyzer is fighting a giant insect and is genuinely worried if the creature is okay, even after it had tried to kill her and her landing party companions ("A Choice for the Future"). The act of inhabiting Misaki may have contributed to her behavior, but some of it (including a habit of twirling her hair) continues after Yurisha awakes from her coma ("Under a Rainbow Sun", "The Planet That We Head For"). She has a playful nature, which she displays when she teasingly calls the overly formal and respectful Lower Storm Leader Dietz "cute" ("The Planet That We Head For").

Despite this, Yurisha never hesitates to defend herself and her values. Yurisha, like Queen Starsha, believes in the importance of all life in the universe, and expresses a deeply caring nature for all living things. She understands and fears the destructive potential of wave motion energy ("Point of No Return"), but unlike her more idealistic sister, she is pragmatic in her outlook. At first, she made no attempt to hide her displeasure at Admiral Okita's plan to fire Yamato's wave motion gun during the Battle of Garmillas, but she later comes to recognize that firing it had saved millions of innocent lives, and defends the decision to Queen Starsha ("One Man's War", "The Distant Promised Land"). She can also show unwavering courage in the face of personal threats, at one time standing her ground and attempting to stare down a Yamato crew member holding her at gunpoint ("Prison Planet 17").

Yurisha states that she loves Yuki Mori ("Prison Planet 17").
