The Type 1 Space Attack Fighter Cosmo Tiger II, also called simply the Cosmo Tiger II and codenamed CT-1,[5] is a trans-atmospheric carrier-based space fighter plane used by the United Nations Cosmo Navy. The Cosmo Tiger II was designed as a successor to the Type-99 Cosmo Falcon, and saw significant action in the Gatlantis War soon after its introduction.

Armaments and Technical Specifications[]

The Cosmo Tiger II is a offers more power and mobility than its predecessor, the Cosmo Falcon.[1] Unlike the Falcon, the Cosmo Tiger II has its weapons mounted externally, making it more versatile.[6] Additionally, it relies on a stealth field, a force field that doesn't reflect radar waves easily, rather than standard stealth equipment to avoid detection.[7] The Cosmo Tiger II also has high mobility units under the fuselage[2] and folding wings to achieve greater mobility.[8]

Warp boosters give Cosmo Tiger IIs a much wider operational range.

The Cosmo Tiger II uses Standard Tactical Multi-Warhead Missiles, which are projectiles with four submunitions. These missiles can detach the submunitions when close to the target, or they can serve as launchers to fire the submunitions while still attached to the plane.[9] They can also hit the target without detaching the submunitions.[10] The UNCN is currently working on adding electronic warfare capabilities to the Cosmo Tiger II.[1]

The Cosmo Tiger II's cockpit is rather conservative in design, being close to that of the earlier Cosmo Falcon and the Cosmo Zero. This is to allow for pilots accustomed to older aircraft to more easily switch to the new model, and due to the conservative tendency of the military’s upper echelons. The console and control stick are also similar to those used on older aircraft. In particular, the control stick has a traditional centered configuration. The central control stick has the advantage of still be usable in the event of an injury to one of the pilot’s arms. The entire consoles organized to make it easier to concentrate on piloting.[5] For long-distance travel, a Cosmo Tiger II can be mounted to a warp booster that allows the fighter to make two warps.[11][10]

Single seat type[]

The basic one-person Cosmo Tiger II design is adaptable for specialized warfare needs. It's equipped with 8 30mm pulse laser cannon on the nose, 10 12.7mm machine guns inside the wings, and with Multi-Warhead Missiles attatched to the bottom of the wings.[1]

Two seats type[]

The two seats type is a bomber variant of the Cosmo Tiger II introduced during the Gatlantis War. It's equipped with a double barrel positron gun turret on top of the fighter. It has a shorter nose compared to the standard variant.[12]

Cosmo Tiger IIb[]

The Cosmo Tiger IIB, also called lightning type, was introduced in time to participate in the Battle of Saturn. It amplifies the standard fighter's firepower and is operated by a crew of three.[3][13] The lightning type is equipped with a turret on its top which is smaller than the one on the two seats type, meaning the gunner has to curl up in a fetal position to get inside. However, the movement rate on the turret is smaller, meaning the gunner can move it with small movements.[14]

The position of the pulse laser cannon has also been moved from the nose to the underside of the fuselage. The lightning type is also equipped with two space torpedoes at the bottom of the fuselage and a positron cannon on the nose.[6][15]

Other variants[]

The Cosmo Tiger II also recieved additional variants such as a comet probe type and a fortress assault type. The comet probe variant was created for the exploration of the White Comet, Gatlantis' mobile capital, and is equipped with a radome at the top and an exploration probe at the bottom. The fortress assault type is equipped with additional wings that extend further up and down from the tips of the main wings and are equipped with 12 ground-to-ground missiles.[2][17]

History[]

The Cosmo Tiger II was developed as a prototype for the Cosmo Tactical Plan (CT plan), which aimed at creating the next generation carrier-based fighter for the Earth Federation Defense Force, under the codename CT-2.[5] The fighter is a successor to the Cosmo Falcon[18] and was the second model proposed for the plan after the Cosmo Tiger I.[1] Its name is partly taken from the CT plan's name.[6] The Cosmo Tiger II was planned to receive various variants from the beginning, including the two seats and three seats versions. The data for them existed for a long time, but they would only enter mass production during the Gatlantis War.[6][19]

By late 2202, Cosmo Tiger IIs had been stationed at United Nations Cosmo Force facilities on the Moon and on Andromeda-class carriers and battleships alongside their Cosmo Falcon predecessors. One of the plane's earliest combat assignments took place during a successful attempt by former crew members of the space battleship Yamato to steal the ship. As fighter pilots from Yamato defected in their Cosmo Tiger IIs, other fighters of the class engaged them. No kills or injuries were suffered on either side, and the intervention of a lone Garmillas fighter armed with an electromagnetic pulse weapon allowed the defectors to escape and dock with Yamato.[11][20]

The Gatlantis War that raged over the following months provided plentiful opportunities for the Cosmo Tiger II to prove its effectiveness. Yamato's squadron played a key role in the Liberation of Terezart. The new versions of the Cosmo Tiger II, including the comet probe and fortress assault variants, were launched from Cosmo Navy carriers were able to take out numerous Gatlantean fighter craft, destroyers, cruisers, and carriers at the Battle of Saturn.[13][19][21]

The 65th Escort Corps arrives at Iscandar

In October 2205, various Cosmo Tiger IIs were assigned to the 65th Escort Corps on the modified Dreadnought-class battlecarrier Hyuga and on the battleship Yamato during a diplomatic trip to the Salezar system.[22] The Cosmo Tiger IIs participated in the conflict between the Garmillas-Earth joint forces and Dezarium.[23][24][25]

Given its significantly improved attack power and fighting performance than the Cosmo Falcon, the Cosmo Tiger II was gradually adopted by the Ground Force other than the Cosmo Force. By 2207, it had become the military's main fighter plane, and a ground-based variant had been developed for usage in the atmosphere.[16]
