The Psychic Attack on Yamato[3] was an attack and sabotage attempt carried out by the Great Garmillas Empire's Ministry of Propaganda and Intelligence department against the Earth battleship Yamato late in the Garmillas War.

Prelude[]

Yurisha's journey[]

In the year 2198 the Earth recieved technological help from Queen Starsha of Iscandar, having found out of the garmillan invasion of the planet, she had sent her sister, Yurisha Iscandar, to gift the terrans with the plans for a Wave-motion engine, so that they could reach planet Iscandar and retrieve a piece of technology capable of reverting the martyred Earth to her habitable, pre-war state.[4]

Mori and Yurisha were severely injured during an incident

Yurisha made contact with the United Nations and ensign Yuki Mori of the UNCF was assigned as her aide. The two however were caught in an incident, perhaps a terrorist attack, which left Yurisha in a comatose state and Mori suffering from amnesia, making her loose all memories prior to the incident.[2][5]

One year later in 2199, the space battleship Yamato, built using wave-motion technology, took off on her journey towards Iscandar, aboard the ship, Yurisha was kept in cryogenic sleep, with her memories being used to chart Yamato's route towards her homeworld. Mori was also selected to serve on the ship as Operation Officer.[6]

Domel's campaign[]

In the weeks prior to the attack the famed garmillan war hero Erich Domel replaced Major General Gremdt Goer as the commanding officer of the Galactic Theatre due to the latter's incompetence in dealing with the advance of the Earth battleship Yamato. Under orders from Domel the dimensional submarine UX-01 had ambushed the battleship. Despite menaging to escape, the fear of potential extra-dimensional foes lead Yamato's crew to carry out routine long-range patrol with a subspace sonar.[7]

The UX-01 deployed various devices under orders from Celestella

Before Domel could carry out another attack on the earthlings, Minister Celestella of the Ministery of Propaganda and Information devised a psychological warfare plan to be used against Yamato, the Minister intended to use a Ghost Link device, hidden in the floating ruins of the Archelias civilisation, on the inferior platform of the Balun Military Base, to project the spirit of the Jirellan special officer Mirenel Linke towards the battleship. For the attack to be carried out as planned the UX-01 was asked to deploy a series of small devices to allow Linke's spirit to reach Yamato.[2][8]

The Attack[]

Mirenel Linke Balun Device

Minister Celestella and Lieutenant Linke arrived at the Balun base aboard the Haizerad-class battleship Shangri-La. With the help of personnel from the Ministry of Propaganda, Linke began operating the Ghost Link device, initiating the attack. She hypnotised all Yamato crewmembers and shut down all non-essential systems, leaving the battleship to spin on her axis out of control.[2]

At that time Lieutenants Susumu Kodai and Mori were out on a Type-100 recon plane carrying out one of the now routine long-range patrols for Yamato, so when Linke's telepathic attack deabilitated the crew the two were unaffected. The two used an emergency airlock to access the ship, as they boarded Yamato's engines were reactivated, leading her in Celestella's hands.[2]

the ship's computers to correct her course, but they were unable to do so, being blocked by the system itself. Realising this meant that their attacker had infiltrated inside of the navigational system, the pair began moving towards the automatic navigation room and the main computer room, the only places where the enemy could access the system. Unbeknownst to them both, as the attack was unfolding, Warrant officer Yuria Misaki, the youngest crewmember aboard the ship and a sensitive, was drawn to the autmatic navigation room where the unconcious Yurisha Iscandar was being kept, and her mind was taken over by the spirit of Yurisha, finally awakened from her year-long coma.[2]

Before Mori and Kodai could reach the navigation room Linke attacked their minds too, sending them into the same sleep as the othercrewmembers. Mori relived her stay at the hospital following her acceident of her one year prior, Linke, who projected herself into Mori's memories, took the place of a nurse. However the Jirel had failed to account for Yurisha. The princess confronted Linke, freeing Mori of her influence and, controlling her Misaki's body, woke her up from her dream. The two moved to the main computer room, trying to stop the ship who was in the process of warping away, after Yurisha, who Mori believed to be Misaki, deduced that Yamato was probably being lead straight into a trap, the older Lieutenant decided to go to the main engine room to manually remove the wave-motion core from the engine, stopping the warp procedures. Mori orderd the iscandarian to stay where she was, unknowingly making herself vulnerable to Linke's telepathy once more.[2]

The special officer wasted no time; as Mori was removing the core from the engine she attacked her mind once more. She created in Mori's mind an illusion depicting her and Mori's foster father in the UNCF HQ on Earth, telling her that if she went on with her plan the Earth itself would be destroyed. Despite understanding that the situation was not right, the Lieutenant was unable to free herself of the Jirel's control, but she did menage to call for Kodai to help her.[2]

Linke's spirit is vaporised by the flood of Wave-motion Energy

Kodai, who had been put through in a similar situation, being forced to relive and confront the memories of his late brother and of the day his family had been killed by a garmillan bomb, had menaged to free himself from the illusion just in time to hear Mori's plea for help. He quickly reached the engine room and entered the section where the wave-motion core was situated, taking the unconcious Mori out of danger and shooting at Linke's avatar which she was manifesting to hypnotise Mori. The special officer found her consciousness to be blocked inside the engine due the Wave-motion shield which was being protected to screen the overall engine room from readiation, so when Kodai reactivated it causing wave-motion energy to flood the section instantly killing Linke's trapped spirit.[2]

Aftermath[]

With Linke's death Celestella remained the last known surviving Jirel in the Great Garmillas Empire, however, as Yamato's crew would come to know months later, another group of Jirellans had already found a new home on the artificial planet Shambleau.[2][9]

The computers at Balun menaged to save the information retrieved by Linke during her attack, such as the the positions of Yamato's guns and the design of the crew uniforms as well as the presence of an Iscandarian on board. Leader Abelt Desler ordered Domel to capture the Iscandarian princess before sinking Yamato, as he dreamed of using her to achieve the unificaition of his empire with Iscandar's.[8][10]

To achieve the Leader's orders the UX-01 carried a platoon of second-class soldiers during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster so that they could board Yamato and kidnap the princess, however the Linke's death had part of the information, and Yurisha’s image was switched with Mori’s, thus leading the boarding party to kidnap the terran lieutenant instead of Yurisha.[10][11]

For sometime Yurisha remained undercover aboard Yamato, however slightly before the Battle of Balun, she revealed her true identity to Mori and then to the rest of the crew, she would eventually take back her own body, leaving Misaki free once again.[4][11]

The Gamiloid used in the attack

In the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 manga adaptation the attack takes place before Goer's demotion and is undertaken by Celestella specifically to not give the already idolatrised Domel even more popularity.[12]

In order to ease Linke's infiltration Celestella utilises the captured Gamiloid aboard Yamato to hack into the battleship's systems. Analyzer, who in the Manga remains uneffected from the psychological attack, is tasked by Mori and Kodai to stop the hacker attack.[13]
