Notes
- In the Classic saga, salutation of respect among the EDF was right hand in a fist over heart with thumb facing to the ground with heels together for ranks lower than Captain. Ranks Captain and higher was allowed to return a standard salute back at the crew or exchange at another Captain or a higher ranking officer. This special salutation technique was abandoned in the 2199 remake and the fist-over-heart was dropped completely; allowing all ranks to salute to each other.
- The fist-over-heart salute was done slightly differently in Season 1 of the original series, as the palm of the fist is facing the chest, not the edge of the fingers. The thumb is either tucked within the fingers or pressed against the index finger. The fist is more centered in some scenes.
- The fist-over-heart salute was readopted in Space Battleship Yamato 2202, but is only used aboard Yamato.

Annotations
- ↑ An anchor badge is sometimes depicted above the stripes of the standard insignia, seemingly denoting commander status. (Ex. Okita, Hijikata, Tani) However, not all fleet commanders are seen using them. (Ex. Yamanami, Ozaki)
- ↑ Outside of Yamato, Ginga and male Cosmo Force Type C uniforms, Lieutenant Commanders and all lower ranks until Ensign wear silver rank insignia instead of golden ones as of 2199. ("Messenger of Iscandar", "Toward a Sea of Stars", "Heir to the Yamato, Her Name is Ginga")
- ↑ Outside of Yamato and male Cosmo Force Type C uniforms, Warrant Officers and all lower ranks have no rank insignia as of 2199. ("Messenger of Iscandar", "Toward a Sea of Stars")
- ↑ The rank of Lieutenant General is only seen written in english and Japanese once in Robert Redrowz's documents. ("Tension – Reach the Embassy on the Moon")
- ↑ Mikage Kiryu's graduation photo shows her father and Hajime Saito in their uniforms. This confirms that the rank of Colonel in the UNCM uses the same rank insignia as the UNCN, however Saito is shown with the equivalent of a captain insignia, which goes against his established rank of Sargent Major. It's unclear whether this is a mistake or if the various insignias changed at some point early in the Great Garmillas War. ("Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark")
- ↑ It's worth noting that, in Japanese, army and naval ranks use the same word.
- ↑ Admiral Dietz's rank is written "提督, Teitoku". The word does not indicate a specific rank, it's the word used to describe any officer at Admiral level. In the Garmillas Imperial Defense Force this would go from Grand Admiral to Admiral.
