Yamato makes its first faster-than-light flight, but is unexpectedly stopped at Jupiter, where it discovers a hidden base and a key part of the Garmillas plan for Earth.

First StepsEdit

As the new space battleship Yamato leaves Earth, it is briefly joined by another vessel, the battleship Kirishima. Commanded by Admiral Ryu Hijikata, Kirishima comes alongside. Its crew stands and salutes Yamato, and the ship flashes a message with its running lights: "We pray for your safe journey." Admiral Juzo Okita returns the salute and Yamato heads for interplanetary space. He orders the command staff to meet with him to make plans for the ship's warp test. As this takes place, a Garmillas observation team observes Yamato from a safe distance and reports the ship's departure to their commander, Colonel Walke Shultz, who decides to continue observing rather than destroying it right away.

  • The prologue of Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark depicts Kirishima immediately after Yamato leaves Earth orbit, on a mission to the Moon to evacuate Hajime Saito and other United Nations Cosmo Marine survivors of a Garmillas attack.
  • The destruction of the floating continent is the first time that Earth forces succeed in wiping out a Garmillas installation. Episode dialogue and an official source describe the continent as a piece of the planet Garmillas, carved out of the planet's crust and relocated to Jupiter[1]. Therefore, the destruction of the continent can also be seen as Earth's first retaliatory strike on the homeworld of its enemy.
  • The "morbid" chant that Lt. Kato performs while throwing darts just before the ship's warp flight is from the Heart Sutra, one of the most famous Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. The sutra teaches the Buddhist tenet that enlightenment comes from recognizing the true emptiness and formlessness of human existence.

  • Why is the Garmillas Empire planning to seed Earth with its own life forms after destroying the planet's native ecosystem? (Possible answer)
